abstract = {The expansion of electric vehicles (EVs) challenges electricity grids by increasing charging demand, thereby making Demand-Side Management (DSM) strategies essential to maintaining balance between supply and demand. Among these strategies, the Valley-Filling approach has emerged as a promising method to optimize renewable energy utilization and alleviate grid stress. This study introduces a novel heuristic, Load Conservation Valley-Filling (LCVF), which builds on the Classical and Optimistic Valley-Filling approaches by incorporating dynamic load conservation principles, enabling better alignment of EV charging with grid capacity. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the heuristic across five EV charging scenarios. In both the Original and Flexible scenarios, LCVF reduced energy demand by up to 10.65%, demonstrating its adaptability and effectiveness. Notably, in the 24-hour Availability scenario, LCVF achieved a reduction of over 20% in energy demand compared to CVF. These findings indicate that LCVF could play a crucial role in enhancing real-world EV charging infrastructure, boosting energy efficiency and grid stability. By integrating DSM strategies like LCVF, energy grids can better accommodate renewable energy sources, promoting more sustainable operations. },

abstract = {Contemporary software systems, such as IoT (Internet of Things) systems, present new challenges to the development process and require new strategies for quality assurance. Reliability engineering aims to detect faults in applications, often in productive environments, providing benefits to the development activity. However, due to the inherent characteristics of these systems, complementary approaches to detect faults beyond traditional testing are needed. The Tricorder methodology evaluates resource consumption profiles as a heuristic for quality assurance, and experimental studies indicate its effectiveness in detecting new faults. This work investigates the use of the Tricorder in the context of reliability engineering to support the validation of contemporary systems, particularly IoT systems. An architecture for a reliability tool is proposed, inspired by software testing concepts. A reference architecture, RefTEST, is used to support the proposed tool. Results indicate that the Tricorder methodology can be implemented as a reliability tool, and its adoption allows for identifying anomalies that are not easily detected by traditional testing methods.},

abstract = { This article presents MontadoDB, a dataset comprising samples of pasture quality parameters, weather data, and satellite images from a set of paddocks in the Alentejo region (southern Portugal), the Beira Interior region (Portugal), and Extremadura (Spain). These regions are part of the Montado system, an agro-silvo-pastoral system featuring low-density trees, pastures, and livestock grazing. The pasture parameters were collected along three vegetative cycles from 2018 to 2021 in 8 different paddocks. After the collecting procedure, pasture samples were submitted to laboratory analysis to determine the reference values of pasture moisture content (PMC, in %), crude protein (CP, in g/100g), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF, in g/100g), using standard analytical methods. For each pasture sample collected, GPS coordinates were recorded. Using these coordinates, the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform was utilized to collect satellite multispectral data and weather information. The MontaDB dataset is publicly available, enabling research focused on the analysis and design of machine learning models for predicting pasture parameters. It can also work as a reference dataset for further experiments based on pasture samples, thereby enhancing research on advanced algorithms that rely on large-scale datasets.},

A widely used software AC technique is loop perforation (LP). This paper presents an Instruction-Level LP (ILLP) approach that relies on approximate hardware instructions. We extended the ACCEPT compiler and SPIKE simulator workflows to generate and simulate applications with ILLP. We evaluated the technique comparing the results of precision, number of instructions, cycles, and energy consumption. ILLP achieves a 74.61% reduction in the number of instructions for the PI application, a 51.40% reduction in the number of cycles for the FFT, and an energy saving of 74.49% for the PI. },

abstract = {Summary With the end of Dennard's scale, processor designers have been looking for new technical alternatives so that approximate computing (AC) has managed to attract the attention of researchers by offering techniques ranging from the application level to the circuit level. When applying approximate circuits into hardware design, the program user may speed up the application. At the same time, a designer may save area and power dissipation at the cost of less accuracy on the results of operations. This article discusses the compromise between controlled accuracy versus physical efficiency by evaluating a set of arithmetic circuits designs. The article also presents new mixed organization approximate designs. To evaluate the approximate design benefits, we performed a comprehensive set of experiments from tailor‐made approximate arithmetic circuits on field‐programmable gate array and application specific integrated circuits technologies. Our results reveal that our proposed mixed approximate designs have promising results on error rates, area usage, and power dissipation compared to the related work. Another interesting result is that one should care about the prototyping platform where the approximate hardware will be synthesized. Tailor‐made approximate cells may take advantage on intrinsic design details than standard cells or even general prototyping platforms. },

abstract = {Abstract The limitations on the scalability of computer systems imposed by the dark‐silicon effects are so severe that they support the extensive use of heterogeneity such as the GP‐GPU for general purpose processing. Performance simulators of GP‐GPU heterogeneous systems aim to provide performance accuracy at the cost of execution time. In this work, we handle time‐consuming simulations of design space exploration systems based on GPUs. We have developed performance predictors based on machine learning (ML) algorithms and evaluated them in accuracy and throughput (number of predictions per second). We measure model accuracy through the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and the model efficiency through a throughput metric (millions of predictions per second). Our experiments revealed that decision trees predictors are the most promising regarding accuracy and efficiency. We applied the best predictors into the MultiExplorer, a dark silicon ‐aware design space exploration tool that allows designers to explore the architecture and microarchitecture of multicore/manycore system design. },

abstract = {After the continuous development of CMOS technology driven by transistor miniaturization and Moore’s law, the scientific community is witnessing the exploration of emerging paradigms to find new ways to develop computational systems. This paper presents critical concepts for understanding some of these new nanocomputing technologies, specifically field-coupled, quantum-dot cellular automata, nanomagnetic logic, silicon dangling bounds, photonic crystal logic, and DNA computing. Next, it shows emerging design automation tools for each of these areas and how they can be applied to support the development of new computing systems. The level of maturity and production speed of solutions achieved by conventional silicon technology thanks to very efficient electronic design automation (EDA) is remarkable. However, here we are dealing with technologies still in their infancy. Therefore, improvements in design automation tools are undoubtedly a way to accelerate the growth of new substrate alternatives and modern applications. },

abstract = {Cloud computing services providers offer on-demand computing resources to applications. Finding the best cloud resource allocation that fits the users’ budget, meets application performance and constraints are still a research challenge. The cloud resource allocation problem is quite akin to the Design Space Exploration (DSE) problem once they both have to find suitable hardware configurations in an ample design space, having incompatible objectives subject to several constraints. This work presents a solution to the cloud resource allocation problem by applying a design space exploration technique. We have designed and developed a software extension, MultiExplorer-VM, from a DSE tool, MultiExplorer, that has a workflow to provide virtual machine configurations according to the users’ requirements and application constraints. A comprehensive set of experiments has been performed to evaluate and validate the proposed tool. We have also compared solutions from our proposal to other existing research work focused on the cloud resource allocation problem based on the Paramount Interaction (PI) technique. The results show that the MultiExplorer-VM achieves significant (better) results than the PI technique. The cost results brought by the MultiExplorer-VM were up to 8.8 times lower compared to the PI technique. The experiments also reveal that for most of the applications, MultiExplorer-VM achieved the optimal cloud configuration. },

abstract = {Photovoltaic (PV) systems are dependent on solar irradiation and environmental temperature to achieve their best performance. One of the challenges in the photovoltaic industry is performing maintenance as soon as a system is not working at its full generation capacity. The lack of a proper maintenance schedule affects power generation performance and can also decrease the lifetime of photovoltaic modules. Regarding the impact of environmental variables on the performance of PV systems, research has shown that soiling is the third most common reason for power loss in photovoltaic power plants, after solar irradiance and environmental temperature. This paper proposes a new statistical predictor for forecasting PV power generation by measuring environmental variables and the estimated mass particles (soiling) on the PV system. Our proposal was based on the fit of a nonlinear mixed-effects model, according to a log-logistic function. Two advantages of this approach are that it assumes a nonlinear relationship between the generated power and the environmental conditions (solar irradiance and the presence of suspended particulates) and that random errors may be correlated since the power generation measurements are recorded longitudinally. We evaluated the model using a dataset comprising environmental variables and power samples that were collected from October 2019 to April 2020 in a PV power plant in mid-west Brazil. The fitted model presented a maximum mean squared error (MSE) of 0.0032 and a linear coefficient correlation between the predicted and observed values of 0.9997. The estimated average daily loss due to soiling was 1.4%. },

In this context, a solution is presented to enable the estimates of dirt losses in photovoltaic generation units. The proposed solution is based on the mathematical modeling of the solar cells and predictive modeling concepts. A device was designed and developed to acquire data from the photovoltaic unit; process them based on a predictive model, and send loss estimates in the generation unit to a web server to help in decision-making support. The results demonstrated the real applicability of the system to estimate losses due to dirt or electrical mismatches in photovoltaic plants. },

One of the challenges in photovoltaic solar plants is the performance maintenance in the presence of adverse environmental conditions. Soiling on the solar panels is one of those challenges having a high decrease impact on the power generation. This work proposes a statistical methodology that estimates the energy losses due to soiling on photovoltaic solar plants. Using environmental and power generation data, the proposed methodology predicts the energy generation using a regression model; and then evaluates if the differences between the observed energy generation data and the predicted energy data are due to soiling. The experiments to validate the system are based on one-year dataset of environmental and power generation data from a solar plant located in the northeast region of Brazil. The results showed that the daily energy losses estimates ranged from 2.20% up to 12.31% in a period less than a month. },

abstract = {In the last years, the agricultural systems based on Crop-Livestock-Forestry integrationhave emerged as a potential solution due to its capacity to maximize land use and reduces the effects of high temperatures on the animals. Within these systems, there exist an interest in technological solutions capable of monitor the animals in real-time. From this monitoring, one of the main interest is to know if an animal is in the sun or in the shade of a tree by using some environmental measures. However, as there is a possibility that the weather is cloudy, real-time monitoring also needs to identify this case. That is, the realtime monitoring also needs to differentiate the shade of a tree from a cloudy weather. The interest in this kind of monitoring is due to the fact that an animal that remains a long time under a shade of a tree provides substantial insights to indicate if this is in thermal stress. This information can be used in decision-making with the goal to reduce the impact of the thermal stress and consequently to provide welfare to the animal and reduces the financial losses. As a solution to identify if an animal is in the sun or in the shade of a tree or if the weather is cloudy, we developed an electronic device, used to capture values of environmental variables, which integrated with a mathematical model predicts the shade state (sun, shade or cloudy) where the animal can be found. We illustrate the performance of the proposed solution in a real data set. },

abstract = {With the end of Dennard's scale, designers have been looking for new alternatives and approximate computing (AC) has managed to attract the attention of researchers, by offering techniques ranging from the application level to the circuit level. When applying approximate circuit techniques in hardware design, the program user may speed up the application while a designer may save area and power dissipation at the cost of less accuracy on the operations results. This paper discusses the compromise between accuracy versus physical efficiency by presenting a set of experiments and results of tailor-made approximate arithmetic circuits on Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platforms. Our results reveal that an approximate circuit with accuracy control could not be useful if the goal is to save circuit area or even power dissipation. Even for circuits that seem to have power efficiency, we should care about the size and prototyping platform where the hardware will be used. },
